The seed for The Higher Than Health Wellness Charity was planted in 2018. The founder, Dr. Dasha Cathey, was a pharmacy student at Texas A&M University and began sharing what she was learning in school with her father and Navy Veteran, Daron Cathey. Her father suffered from years of medical issues, starting with the diagnosis of diabetes in the late 1990s that transpired into a multitude of complications, such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, chronic kidney disease, glaucoma, and pain conditions. Over the years, many of these chronic conditions worsened. He lost his vision and suffered from kidney failure, which required hemodialysis three times weekly to clean his blood in order to survive.

As Dasha progressed in pharmacy school, she continued sharing information with her father. He was now able to go to his medical care team confident with knowledge about his health. He was also able to make decisions about his own health and was well-informed about the medical information given to him. He was equipped with the right education to take control of his own health. Daron was so passionate about sharing what he was learning. Therefore, he educated and encouraged others who were newly or formerly diagnosed with diabetes. He informed them that being diagnosed with diabetes is not a death sentence if they learned and took control of their health early like he wished he had. 

 

Dasha and her father wanted to continue to share their knowledge to assist others during times of uncertainty in the healthcare field. On January 21st, 2021, Daron Cathey passed away from the many complications he suffered from over the years. However, this would not stop Dasha from continuing the work they started together.  She is inspired by her father's strength and wants to help others who may not have the support to assist them with resources and education.
